The Ulpotha Experience

At Ulpotha, you are who you are, not what you do.

Nurturing

The magic of Ulpotha

People return to Ulpotha year after year and bring trusted friends with them to share the Ulpotha experience. The true magic of Ulpotha is how deeply it connects you to nature, grounds you and brings you back to yourself. Even the simplest things take on a quiet and subtle power; the breeze feels like a gentle caress, the beauty all around softens your gaze, and the cool, silk-like water of the lake leaves you feeling renewed.

Here at Ulpotha, in the heart of Sri Lanka, everything is rooted in nature, and what you experience is both rare and completely authentic.

Cycling at Ulpotha
Cycling at Ulpotha

Days unfold with yoga, nourishing organic vegetarian meals, Ayurveda and time spent in nature. You might swim in the lake, cycle along quiet paths shaded by trees, sit in a swing, or share stories with new friends under the stars. You can join in or simply be present in your own space, with no pressure or distractions. Thursday afternoons are set aside for optional excursions to nearby monuments, cultural sites and temples, with transport provided, but you may prefer to remain at Ulpotha and enjoy time on your own.

Ulpotha's uniqueness lies in its simplicity. Life here is gently off-grid, with electricity-free living by design and minimal Wi-Fi- just enough to be in touch with loved ones- and days lived close to the land. The water you drink and use in Ulpotha comes from the spring-fed well in the courtyard of the Walauwwa. This well never runs dry and has been the last resort for all the surrounding villages for as long as the Walauwwa has been around. Ulpotha affords you the rare luxury of drinking fresh water on tap. It's naturally a digital detox retreat. You have the rare chance to slow down and reconnect with yourself. Many describe the experience as both grounding and transformative, something that stays with them long after they leave. You may feel inclined to take off your shoes on arrival and stay barefoot until you leave, making the most of this grounding, off-grid retreat experience. Living like a local has never felt so good.

Uniqueness

Why Ulpotha?

There are few places left where you can live so closely with nature and feel completely at ease, far from the demands of modern life. Ulpotha is one of them. An off-grid retreat in the heart of the Sri Lankan jungle.

A woman in a batik sarong hanging a lit blue-glass oil lantern from a tree in the indigo-walled courtyard at dusk

Ulpotha sits in Sri Lanka's North Western Province, near the town of Maho, about a three-hour drive northeast of Colombo's international airport. Located at the foot of the Galgiriyawa mountain, on the edge of a lotus-ringed lake on one side and surrounded by emerald green paddy fields on the other, you encounter indescribable natural beauty and serenity. By design, Ulpotha is electricity-free, and life moves to the rhythm of the day. Solar-powered lamps and lanterns light paths and accommodation, creating a captivating, romantic sense of times gone by.

Flowing directly from the absence of electricity are the deep bonds frequently formed between guests, often like-minded and interesting individuals. This is perhaps because of a subconscious re-connection to humanity's deeply rooted oral traditions: when people gathered around a fire to exchange stories, histories and friendship.

Ulpotha's atmosphere and welcoming home feel (rather than an eco-friendly hotel), with a slow-paced house party vibe, further enhance this magical experience. Because Ulpotha's beautiful natural environment is present and immediate everywhere, and reassuringly safe and unthreatening, it lets you enjoy the infinite pleasures and deep health benefits of reconnecting with nature.

Library at Ulpotha
Library at Ulpotha

Ulpotha's roots stretch far back in time and history, boasting a rich tapestry of facts, myths, legends, and lore. It has been the site of an eloping crown prince and an outcast maiden, a pilgrimage site for travelling mendicants, and a place of buried treasures, lending it a special magical energy that you are invited to enjoy.

Ulpotha is, more than anything else, a feeling. Yoga, the food, the people, nature and Ayurveda are all a part of that. Together, they offer something too hard to describe but, more often than not, a naturally life-changing experience.

About

About Ulpotha

Ulpotha makes no effort to be anything other than itself: a place that is simple, joyful, and full of charm and character, allowing you to soften. It's there for you to enjoy in your own way, and those who pass through often find that a sprinkle of its quiet magic stays with them when they leave.

Ulpotha is a privately run, integrated community with deep ties to the neighbouring villages. The clearest sign of that bond is simple: for over 25 years, we have lived without walls, gates, locks or security guards, held safe by the goodwill of everyone within and around us. It's a community in its truest sense.

Community-led governance

Ulpotha is run day to day by a village committee of six. Two members are permanent, one female and one male. The remaining four rotate each year, with at least one woman always represented. The founders, Viren Perera and Giles Scott offer guidance on long-term building and investment only when the committee asks for it.

Meaningful local support

Our free Ayurveda clinic for neighbouring villages is one way we give back. All Ayurveda treatments at Ulpotha help support the Ayurveda clinic Dr Srilal runs. We also help maintain local temples and shrines, and provide quiet, practical support to schools, hospitals, village charities and water management projects.

Food

Organic food

Meals at Ulpotha are freshly cooked in pots over open fires with organic ingredients grown on the land.

Our food is vegetarian, naturally gluten-free, with an abundance of fresh vegetables, organic red rice and tropical fruit. Rooted in traditional rice and curries from the area, no specific 'Master Chef' shaped the food. Instead, the dishes served at Ulpotha have evolved over its 30-year existence by a simple process of elimination. Ulpotha is electricity-free by design, so all food is freshly picked, un-refrigerated, and cooked in terracotta pots on open fires.

Eating at Ulpotha is a gentle, fuss-free reset. Our food is celebrated in Carina Cooper's book Ulpotha: A Kitchen in Paradise. (£20 in Ulpotha). While we can't cater for special diets, every meal is a generous spread, so you can simply choose what suits your taste from the many vegetarian dishes served at each meal.

Yoga

World-class yoga

Ulpotha's natural beauty creates the perfect setting for yoga. It feels as though the land itself was intentionally made for yoga retreats.

Ulpotha wasn't planned as a yoga retreat, but through a happy run of chance, it soon became the heart of life here. Now it's hard to imagine a place better suited to steady, honest practice; Ulpotha is known as the best yoga retreat in Sri Lanka.

Most yoga sessions are held in the open-sided yoga shala, featuring a teak floor. Breezes move through, birdsong carries across the fields, and you feel close to the land. At times, a yoga teacher may guide practice by the lake or under the trees for a deeper sense of connection.

Yoga styles at Ulpotha vary by visiting yoga teacher and season, including Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Iyengar, Yin, and Prana Flow. Whatever the form, the focus is clear guidance, thoughtful sequencing and time to breathe. Yoga at Ulpotha is about presence, not performance or competition. Tune in, switch off, and let the yoga practice meet you where you are.

Each of our highly experienced, world-renowned yoga teachers is skilled at providing the right mix of encouragement and challenge for every individual, regardless of their yoga practice level. Yoga at Ulpotha suits all levels.

You will leave Ulpotha with added yoga knowledge and a renewed motivation to continue your practice at home, both on and off the mat.

Beyond yoga, Ulpotha offers Ayurvedic treatments as part of its wellness offerings. You can consult our resident Ayurveda physician, Dr Srilal, and enjoy therapies that complement your yoga practice and support your holistic well-being.

Ayurveda

Ayurveda treatments at Ulpotha

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian tradition that restores balance to body, mind, and spirit through food, herbs, and daily practices.

Every Ayurveda plan begins with a personal consultation with our resident Ayurveda physician, Dr Srilal, and includes two phases: preparation and elimination.

Preparatory therapies

These are the nurturing Ayurvedic treatments many people know. They include massage with warm herbal oils, oil applications, steam baths, saunas and herbal baths. They loosen impurities, calm the nervous system, and prepare the body.

Elimination therapies

These help the body clear what has been loosened. In classical Ayurveda this group is known as Panchakarma and includes five methods: inhalation, purgation, emesis, enemas and blood-letting.

At Ulpotha, we do not prescribe or perform emesis, enemas or bloodletting. Your Ayurveda treatment programme may include gentle methods such as inhalation and, where appropriate, carefully guided purgation. Our Ayurveda physician, Dr Srilal, oversees all treatments and adjusts them based on how you feel each day.

Shorter stays, such as the Sanasuma programme of seven days or less, focus on preparatory treatments. These may be paired with gentle inhalation as the only elimination method.

If you stay longer, your Ayurveda plan may include purgation where appropriate. The initial consultation with the doctor is essential and will determine which, if any, elimination therapies are right for you.

For Ayurveda programmes of ten days or fewer, you will receive treatments every day, usually totalling one to two hours. Longer programmes include planned rest days to let the body absorb the work.

Ayurveda is an integral part of your yoga retreat at Ulpotha.

Discover

Sri Lanka's ancient beauty and cultural heritage

You can choose to join excursions on Thursday afternoons, when there is no yoga, that explore the history and landscapes around Ulpotha. The hills nearby are still home to cave-dwelling ascetics and shamans, and the land carries the living spirit of gods, kings, priests, and the romance of its past.

Ulpotha is situated in the oldest inhabited region of Sri Lanka, an area rich in archaeological attractions and natural beauty.

You can visit sites that are so off-the-beaten track that you may feel like you are discovering them for the first time yourself.

We offer optional half-day excursions on all Thursdays, with transport provided. There are many intriguing and interesting sites within a 30 to 45 minute radius of Ulpotha.

If you wish to go on a full day excursion, we can arrange the necessary transport for you.

Nature

Nurturing & nature

Ulpotha is a place created in harmony with the land, leaving only the lightest touch.

The primary reason that Ulpotha is open for only part of the year is to protect its natural environment from excessive strain. Ulpotha welcomes guests for yoga and Ayurveda retreats from June to August and again from November to March, and rests for the months in between. For the same reason, guest numbers are limited to 20, and our prices reflect the revenue needed to sustain this enchanting microcosm year to year with the least possible environmental strain. Ulpotha uses age-old organic and biodynamic farming methods to protect its flora and fauna and its spring-fed wells.

Ulpotha uses no mechanised farming equipment. Everything is done by hand or with buffaloes.

Almost all construction uses biodegradable materials. We are proud to say that, with the exception of stone works and the Walauwwa (the main house), the rest of Ulpotha will be seamlessly reclaimed by nature in a matter of months when Ulpotha comes to its inevitable end some day.
